Recent travels led me to New Zealand where I was struck by the rock forms and stunning landscapes, but more than anything the ubiquitous tree fern. I have tried to interpret some qualities of these ferns in the surface of pillow dishes, tubes and tripod vessels. These represent the latest extension of my work with coloured clays. Copper greenA thin layer of copper-stained clay is bonded onto a block of plain clay and decoration is scored and impressed through the top layer. The block is stretched until it becomes thin enough to form by wrapping or press-moulding to the required shape. After biscuit firing a matt glaze is applied, this reacts with the copper beneath the give a vivid range of blues and metallic greens. (Not for food use) Terra cotta and porcelainAnother new combination of coloured clays. These pieces begin life as a block of terra cotta clay and a thin layer of porcelain is bonded to the surface. Scored and impressed motifs alter the surface before it is stretched to achieve a slab thin enough with which to build, usually by wrapping or forming. A little glaze is used to seal the surface. |
